Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who endanger our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
