The English and Welsh Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw mirrors their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' shock early exit.

Other Notable Pool Draws

Ireland alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool together, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they secured a convincing win, with their opponents failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, both made a strong impression as underdogs in France, complete that same group.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and world number one the Springboks before the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans win their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the pools play out according to the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from the likes of England and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that half of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with Japan, future hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

Although the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
